Restrictions to visitation made until further notice due to the Coronavirus outbreak

Following national guidance, there have been restrictions placed on most hospital visitation.

About the restrictions

These restrictions have been put in place in order to protect NHS staff and patients from the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) and to make sure that front-line workers and vulnerable people are not put at risk.

The NHS national guidance states that most hospital visitation has been suspended, with the following exceptions:

  • The patient you are visiting is receiving end-of-life care
  • If you are the birthing partner for a woman in labour – although you will not be able to remain on the ward after the birth
  • If you are a parent or carer visiting your child
  • You are visiting a person with a mental health issue such as dementia, a learning disability or autism, where not being present would cause the patient to be distressed.

In all cases, it is essential that you call the ward or unit beforehand to check that you can visit.

You must not visit the hospital if you, or someone you live with, have any of the following symptoms:

  • A high temperature
  • A new continuous cough

If you are unable to visit

We appreciate that this is a worrying time and being unable to visit loved ones in hospital may be distressing. However, where possible you are advised to keep in contact with your friends and family in hospital via phone and video calls in order to protect the most vulnerable from Coronavirus.
